ASEAN FLAVORS

Rongros, Bangkok, Thailand

Nestled on the bustling banks of the Chao Phraya River, Rongros isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a portal to the heart of Thailand’s culinary heritage. Translated as “House of Flavors,” this establishment lives up to its name, offering a unique and delectable journey through generations of treasured family recipes. The vintage décor, featuring chandeliers, painted Chinese panels, and warm wooden furniture, reflects the restaurant’s history and adds to its charm. It’s not surprising that this is one of the most beautiful Bangkok restaurants; Rongros is the brainchild of Ou Baholyodhin, the creative director of Sansiri PLC. But in contrast to the contemporary, urban designs for Sansiri’s luxury condominiums, Rongros is a celebration of all things old but gold.
Rongros’ menu isn’t a sprawling list of dishes, but rather a curated selection of time-honored favorites. The menu takes you on a journey through Bangkok for all ages, from traditional watermelon with dried fish salad to decadently dark iced mochas. Recommended menu options include Chilly Lime Vermicelli, Minced Pork, Peanuts, and Dried Shrimp Salad, as well as healthy dishes with many ingredients, like Crisped Prawn, Stir-Fried Morning Glory in Shrimp Paste, and Salted Egg Yolk. Don’t leave without enjoying a refreshing dessert, such as Watermelon and Aromatic Crispy Snakehead Fish. In addition to its delicious food, Rongros is also known for its exceptional service. The staff members are friendly, attentive, and eager to accommodate any special requests or dietary restrictions.
Thailand and China have interacted for centuries, influencing each other’s cultures and cuisines. Ingredients like rice, noodles, and soy sauce are common to both. The Chinese panels in the restaurant décor hint at potential historical Chinese influence on the recipes. While some shared ingredients exist, the menu description emphasizes typically Thai elements like chilies, herbs, and seafood. Be sure to request a table by the window, to dine with a remarkable view of the Chaopraya River and Wat Arun, the iconic and beautiful Temple of Dawn. Located in close proximity to popular attractions such as the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, Rongros is the perfect spot to refuel and relax after a day of exploring the city. As the sun dips below the horizon, the terrace transforms into a romantic setting, perfect for enjoying a memorable meal with loved ones.
